A New Era Of Music Video Production

Digital convergence media is one of the most influential trends within society. The phenomenon of media convergence can be defined as the process of new technologies merging with existing media (Dwyer, 2010, 2). Through this process old media is transformed into new digital format as a method of enhancing the viewing experience. This essay will discuss the impact of media convergence through analysing the music video industry.

The effects of digital media convergence over the past two decades has re shaped the music video industry. Todays music video industry is shaped by the modern day consumer who demands entertainment in fast, convenient doses throughout the entire duration of the day. The industry's ability to adapt to these changes have been made possible by developments in portable web browsing devices and software programmes such as youtube, mediafire and vimeo.

The creation of such programs has spawned a resurgence of the music video industry. Despite these new and interactive distribution channels the industry has still had to re think the way they produce music videos.

Driven by digital media convergence in this new era of music video creation the phenomena of participatory media also known as User Generated Content has been born. The birth of participatory media is the result of a cultural shift which focused on literacy from individual expression to community involvement (Murygesan, S. 2007). This cultural shift can be linked to the growth in new digital technologies such as youtube, cheap digital cameras and social networking sites. The developments in these technologies allows individuals to creatively express themselves within the mass media environment. In doing so the borders that existed between the filmmaker, artist and the consumer have been blurred (Barker, D. 2010).

Participatory media encourages the individual to express themselves by drawing from inspiration material. Youtube sensation Keenan Cahill is a an example of how participatory media is used within music videos. The video posted by Cahill created using only a laptop has since August 2010 generated 43,077,607 views. Cahill video suggest that media convergence is the result of people taking media into their own hands. Entertainment is no long just a diversion designed to provide amusement or pleasure (Singhal, A 1999) . Within the digital convergence culture it involved the life's of those who consume it it and as a result they to become phenomena within society (Jenkins, H. 2006) .

This boom in user created content has resulted in a huge increase in the amount of content that exists on the web. Today amateur generated content far out weighs the number of professionally produced videos (Sexton, J. 2007). To cut through this noise music video creatives have had to come up with new innovative methods to gain attention. Both Lo fi and hybrid music video are examples of new music video styles that attempt to do this.

Lo-fi production used in professional music videos is a technique used to give a movie a home made feeling. The artists puts large emphasise on the concept of the video rather than the video equipment and used in the production (Barker, D. 2010). The purpose of this is spark a viral effect where viewers are compelled to pass the video on through mediums such as social network sites or email chains (Vega, T. 2011).

The video "Ok Go" directed by James Frost is an example of a film which uses this lo-fi techniques. The video uses a one take method in conjunction with a clever concepted dance routine rather than a large budget to gain attention. Since its release on the web during February 2009 the film has gone viral and has now been streamed 6,757,472 times. It is extremely difficult to determine which videos have the capabilities to become a viral sensation. Without the effects of digital convergence media music videos would no longer have the ability to gain this level of attention in a mass media environment (Kulash, D.2010)

M.I.A - BORN FREE VIDEO OFFICIAL (real and... by elnino

Romain Gravas in juxtaposition to Frost uses high end production techniques in his music video titled "Born Free" yet questions society's social agenda as a method of gaining attention from a mass audience. His video utilises the internet as a distribution network. Due to the controversial nature of the film the band MIA would never have been able to air this on television. Digital media convergence allows the artist to express themselves in a unrestricted matter. The convergence of media formats has resulted in the creation of a more innovative and creative space for music videos to exist within.

This new digital era has not only changed the way video content is created and consumed it has also manipulated the the way we view subject matter. Hybrid media is today commonly used in music videos. An example of this is seen in Geoff Mcfetridge video "Plaid." The video is a parametric mix between creative outlets such as architecture and music videos. Using programs such as after effects the live action space is blended with the virtual space creating a paranormal effect. In using multiple mediums the viewing experience is enhanced and the artist is able to brake free from the classical MTV performance based music video. (Manovich, L. 2007)

Through analysing the recent trends in music videos it it clear that digital media convergence has become a huge phenomenon within the world of music videos.
It has morphed the way we create, produce, record and consume music videos. Today music videos exist in a high challenging technological world where creativity, personalisation and individuality set the standards for excellence. In this new environment it is clear that as a result of media convergence culture the industry is no longer driven by the demands of record labels and television stations. Rather it is driven by the individual.

Last Saturday I shot a segment for an up and coming SBS documentary that follows a team of disabled sailors who will be competing in the sydney to Hobart race this year. The documentary is being directed Luke Robinson who has produced a number of fantastic piece for Both SBS and national geographics. The jourey of the charaters in documently will make for a very inspirational story so i will be sure to keep you posted when it goes to air.

Last week i ventured in to Banda Ache which is situated at the top of the Indonesian island chain. The province is known for its long lasting civil war, controversial rainforest logging, the devastating effect the 2005 tsunami had on its people and its radical Muslim groups. It took 5 plane's either way to reach our location where we surprisingly where greeted with mostly hostile loving people. The trip was apart of a project I am working on at the moment for a exhibition i will be holding early next year.

I just added the Yashica T4 weatherproof to my toy collection. The camera has been used by many pros including Terry Richardson who for many years has been a great inspiration to me. The cameras mobility, sharp lens and the fact that it shot on 35mm film made it the perfect camera to assist me in collecting images for a new series i am working on. Last week acquired another old film body. Rather confident that all the functions where working I proceeded to shoot a test roll. All seems to be working fine except for the fact that once you get to the end of the roll there is no indication which means you can end up with multiple exposures if your not careful, on the upside it can make for a rad effect.

Last night Still Filthy a movie I did a large amount of work on earlier this year picked up “Movie of the Year” in the poll awards, the biggest night in surfing. Wades and Taj's section where the two key sections i worked on and the level of surfing in these sections will blow your mind. This was confirmed last night as Taj was awarded movie section of the year for his part in Still Filthy. Last week i was up the coast with Rasta. He told me of his climate meeting in Melbourne where he met with Al Gore, who reinforced in him that one individuals can change the world. He talk of rising mercury levels in the ocean making fish a no longer a health option in most countries. After this he proceed to spot a whale in which i had trouble seeing even through my lens way out on the horizon. Rasta then went on to my amazement to tell me of his next adventure in which he plans to canoe from byron to bondi to raise awareness about climate issues.

The man truly is a decedent from the water gods.

Slum Style

During High school my best friend threw some of the best house parties our year saw. Wild nights of binge drinking, teen romance and the enevable nude spar. His 16th and 18th where amoung some of my high school hilights. On saturday three years sience his last house party my best mate Sudzys held his 21st. The theme was Slum Style, arguably the most comfortable theme you could ever choose for a party held in the winter. The house was decorated with cardboard box, trollies full of beer in paper bags, barrel fires and there was even a cardboard box dance floor. The night was super fun and reminded all involved how timeless house parties are. With that said I say we bring them back once again.

How to keeping the Ball rolling in slow times

Over the past two week the global financial crisis has really taken its toll on my commercial work. A number of jobs I had on my calander have been canceled. At 1st this was both distressing and disappointing however after speaking to a number of people its clear I am not the only one out there too loose a couple jobs to the GFC and that much good can come from this low time.

With this in mind i have taken the opportunity to work on my own personal projects, update my show reels, surf as much as possible and hang out with mate i don't normally get to see due to my tight schedule.

NEW TRALIER RELEASED FOR THE SPLINTERS DOCUMENTRY

A few year back i was sent into the deep dark jungle to work on an ongoing documentary about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea.

SPLINTERS is the first feature-length documentary film about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea.

In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Lido. Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic.

A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.

SPLINTERS is currently in post-production and produced by In Effect Films, an independent production company located in Los Angeles, California.

PingPong Underground is a documentary which i have been lucky enough to work on with a group of greatly tallented friends. The doco is still in its early stages yet it looks as though its about take off fast in the near future. Last Saturday we filmed the title sequence to the trailer. With 2 cases of beer things got a little out of hand towards the end as paint started to fly every where however the outcome was really cool. I was back in the office with Stab magaizine and Billabong to shoot Andy Irons part of the winter 2010 catalogue yesterday. Going into the shoot many of us where a little worried to say the least as AI is Notoriasly short tempered and difficutly too work with in the studio. Yet AI was in great spirts looking fit, happy and healthy in the company of his lovly wife Lindy.

If AI decides to come back to the tour next year I am sure he will move straight back to the top stronger pgysicaly and mental than ever befor. Yet even if he dose make the decicion not to come back , the mans got 3 world tittles and still surfs unbelivable. What on earth does he have left to prove? Its great to see Andy taking some time out to do what he loves. Finding good waves and spending time with family and friends.

After spending the last month in Aus during which Andy scored eipic waves in both western australia and Angorie. Andy is off back home to hunt a few extra clips for still filthy befor the dead line.

Its no secret in the surfing world that there is a new generation of innovative surfers out there blowing minds with their new approach to aerial surfing. Yet few are familiar with the young group of Aussie surfers who have started to make a push in big wave surfing. Last Sunday I headed down the coast to chase a spot the boys recon is heavier than chops (feet for feet). Braking meters from the rock the boys took some bad beatings. The toll was over 10 destroyed boards and a few cuts and bruises. Dean Bowen, Karl Attkins, Byron Bartlet and Sam Wrench all went super hard, pushing the limits futher than anyone elles. It wont be long till these kids are ruling the big waves scene.

Last night the Wolf and Cub "Science and Sorcery" tour made a stop by my local pub (AKA the Bounty). Being a Wednesday night there few option so a group of my friends and I decided to check it out over a couple of beers.

Over the past 5 months i have been collecting interviews for FCS's new web site which is due to be released later in the year. Today however was my most special adventure yet. Sam Bruton (FCS marketing assistant) and I where lucky enough to get the chance to head up to Newcastle to shoot a interview with Mark Richards. The sight seeing is far post card perfect in most part of Newcastle however it is home to some intresting charaters and fasinating run down streets. A perfect place to have a camera handy.

Pat Gudauskas & Owen Wright blow up in the SriLankan Airlines Pro

If you did not catch the final of the SriLankan Airlines Pro Championship held in the Maldives you really missed out. Both Owen and Pat went mad, showcasing some of the most innovative surfing ever seen in an ASP world tour surfing event. Pat during the event not only pulled the 1st ever rodeo flip in an ASP competition but he also pulled the 2nd, during the thrilling final to score his second perfect ten. The score however was still not enough to over take Owen whos similar explosive airial surfing earned him a heat scores of 19.23 out of a possible 20 points.

The surfing showcased by these 2 young competitors is a glimpse of what is to come on the WCT in 2010. You can mark my words both Pat and Owen will be joining the likes of Jordy and Dane next year as representives of today modern surfing force.

I have been super busy this week with uni exams. As a result I have not had a lot of time to find new material for the blog. I was however this week commissioned to come up with a series of photographs to be exhibited in Art Zpace "09". The the exhibition will be run later in the year on the north beaches of sydney and will showcase some emerging artist in the area .

---- 5D mark II review ----

I have now had the 5D mark II in my position for approximately 3 months. During this time I have taken it along with me to a number of jobs, using it in a variety of situations.

I have to say the camera lives up to the hype. For me being a camera operator who enjoys shooting stills and video this was just the camera I was looking for. Although you can’t shoot video and stills at the same time, the conveniences of only having to carry a single body on your neck which can capture amazing 21MP images and has the capacity to shoot full HD video is ideal for me.

Predominately I have used the video function of this camera to shoot lifestyle. Yet the compact nature of this camera and fact that I can shoot video through 35MM lens has allowed me to capture vision like never before.

The camera however does have a few small flaws. Firstly I would not recommend this camera to anyone who is in the market looking for a new video camera. This camera for me until the new firmware is released does not have enough manual control to replace your high-end video cameras.

The camera is also difficult to hold at times as a result of only being able to shoot in live view mode, making some shots hard to nail. For example with this camera it is very difficult to shoot zoomed in and maintain a steady shot without a tripod.

This issue also effect the quality of the internal mic system as I find I am constantly picking up the sound of changing setting on the camera in my audio tracks.

These two issues however can be worked around by purchasing any of the following accessories.

A external rode mike for $180 which can be attached to an external arm. The external arm helps stabilize the camera when shooting hand held and also helps isolate the audio recording mechanism, which mean you pick up better sound tracks.

Alternatively the following rig can be purchased for a little under $2000. I feel for most users this investment would not be worth the money until Canon release the rumored new firmware which will allow for more manual control and make this rig more operator friendly.

Details for the new firmware can be seen on the following site http://5dfix.wordpress.com/. Yet by the sounds of things canon will not be releasing a slow mo function, which is one feature I would love to see included. This technology however with give full aperture control, more ISO settings and variable frame rates.

All in all the 5D mark II is by far the best DSLR I have used yet with its fantastic video camera capabilities i feel this puts this camera on a league of its own. If you have any questions about the functionality of this camera I would be more than happy to answer them for you
